Lamp Shade Holder - when do you use what?

Below we briefly explain the (4) most common ways to attach a (glass) lampshade.

Glass carrier.

When to use: with a lampshade without collar.
The glass carrier comes inside the lampshade. You need a cover plate on the outside of the lampshade. On the one hand in terms of finish, it just looks neat. On the other hand, to prevent the hood from sliding and possibly sliding off the carrier and falling.

If you hang the lamp shade directly on the lamp wire , use a strain relief.

Lamp Shade Holder (with 3 screws).

When to use: with a lampshade with a raised collar.
Measure the outer dimensions of the upright collar of the lampshade, preferably in millimeters.
And then find a lampshade holder that fits over it.
For glass lampshades, an outer diameter of 5.5 - 5.8 cm // 2.15 - 2.3 inch is a common collar size.

If you hang the lamp shade directly on the lamp wire , also use a strain relief.

As for tightening the 3 screws: fixed but not too tight, it remains a glass cover.

Retainer spring.

When to use: with a lampshade without collar.
Not suitable for lampshades, where the opening is larger than approx. 6 cm // 2.5 inch
In that case you use a glass carrier (see above).

When you place the lampshade on / over the retainer spring: act calmly but firmly.
And sometimes it doesn't work, it really doesn't fit. Then don't force it, you will probably break the glass. And always watch out for your fingers.

Hang the lamp directly on the lamp wire, then use a strain relief.

Fitting with external thread

When to use: with a lampshade without collar.
Can also be done with a lampshade with a collar, but is less common.

The idea is quite simple; you clamp the lampshade between 2 shade rings. So 1 shade ring on the top / outside of the hood and 1 shade ring on the inside of the hood.

This can be done with an e14 fitting or with an e27 fitting.
The choice of fitting to use is made on the basis of the opening in the lamp shade (inner diameter). Again, measure exactly, preferably in millimeters.

And also here, if you hang the lamp directly on a lamp wire, use strain relief.
